The Dachshund, known also by the name Teckel, is a famous dog due to his particular low and elongated doby shape but, even if they all have a similar appearance, they can be differentiated according to the size, type of hair and coat color. How many types of Dachshund dogs are there?

Recognizing a Dachshund dog is easy (short and squat legs, longer than the height, low and long ears) but it is a bit more difficult to distinguish them among the existing different types.

Types of Dachshunds depending on the size

The measurements of the Dachshund are calculated based on the circumference of the chest after the 15th month of age. They are therefore divided into 3 categories: Kaninchen German Dachshund, Dwarf German Dachshund and Standard German Dachshund.

1. KANINCHEN DACHSHUND

The Teckel Kaninchen is the smallest one, with a chest circumference of 30 cm and a length of less than 20cm. Being the smallest it is good not to make him make excessive efforts, such as jumping or climbing stairs.

2. DACHSHUND DWARF

The Teckel Dwarf is the medium sized dachshund, despite being objectively a very small dog. His chest circumference ranges from 31 to 36 cm and weighs between 5 and 7 kg.

3. STANDARD DACHSHUND

The Standard Teckel is the largest: the length of the body reaches 40-50 cm, its chest circumference exceeds 36 cm, while its weight is between 7 and 9 kg. Compared to other dachshunds, he has a greater load to carry, if he gets fat, in fact, there is a risk of problems with the small legs and back.

Types of Dachshunds depending on the hair

Based on the texture and softness of the hair, there are 3 categories: Hard-haired Dachshund, Long-haired Dachshund and Short-haired Dachshund.

1. HARD HAIR DACHSHUND

The wirehaired Dachshund has the whole body covered with bristly, dense and close-fitting hair with undercoat. The muzzle, eyebrows and ears are also bushy. This variety of coat  is said to have originated as a protection for the dog’s need to hunt among shrubs and thorny plants.
It is not recommended to wash it very often as it would weaken the roots of the hair.

2. LONG HAIRED DACHSHUND

The longhaired Dachshund has a smooth, soft and shiny coat, which covers the entire body, including the ears, the back of the limbs and the underside of the tail. It has two overlapping layers of hair and should be brushed gently with a comb with very dense teeth.

3. SHORT HAIR DACHSHUND

The short-haired Dachshund is the most famous. The coat is dense, shiny, smooth and so close to the body that it almost seems like a second skin. To stay healthy, his diet must be taken care of and it is recommended to groom him with a soft brush.

Types of Dachshunds by color

The Dachshund can take on different color variations, with various combinations also depending on the type of hair.

1. UNICOLORED DACHSHUND

The Unicolor Teckel can vary from fawn to yellow to a dark red tone.

2. TWO-TONE DACHSHUND

Bicolor Teckel has a dark colored base, usually on brown and black, above which there are spots of shades ranging from yellow to fiery red.

3. THE ARLECCHINO DACHSHUND

The Teckel Arlecchino or brindle has a coat covered with an infinite variety of shades ranging from white, to beige, to gray. The background is black, silver or chocolate color. This extravagant coloring makes him even more beautiful and fun than the standard colors.

4. DRY LEAF DACHSHUND

Dry Leaf Teckel has a color reminiscent of the warm red / yellow / brown nuances typical of dry leaves. The coat is not spotted, but it is shaded.

5. BOAR COLORED DACHSHUND

Teckel Color Boar has a gray-black color, like that of wild animals, and is almost always found in wire-haired dachshunds. At the ends (paws, beard and attachment of the ears) the hair may be hazel.
