HOW TO NAME YOUR CAT

Share the love

When you welcome a new member of the family into your new home, it’s time to decide which name most suits them. Choosing a name for your cat identifies him or her, and it can sometimes capture meanings and characteristics of your kitten.

How to choose a name

In some cases, pet-parents already have clear ideas even before adopting a cat. In other cases, they wait until they meet their pet to choose the most suitable name. A quick glance is enough to work out which one suits the newcomer best.

One aspect to be taken into account when choosing is undoubtedly the length of the name. It is best to avoid names that are too long and difficult. Cats, in fact, perceive the sound of the name. This is why a short name helps them to memorise it. Finally, be careful not to choose a name with a similar sound to another member of the family. You could risk confusing the kitten!

Which names to choose

If you have recently adopted a kitten, there are so many names to choose from. You may find some inspiration using one of these criteria.

1. You can be inspired by zodiac signs such as Ares, Leo, Scorpio, Pisces, Virgo or Libra.

2. By coat colour such as Ash, Ivory or Ginger, Raven or Amber, Chocolate, Tiger or Blue.

3. Taking inspiration from male mythological characters is also a good idea, here are some examples: Ares, Argos, Hermes, Eros, Achilles, Orion, Hector, Hercules, Ulysses, Apollo, Zeus, Hermes or Orpheus.

4.. Why not get inspired by food? Nacho, Pancake, Tuna, Cookie, Cinnamon, Olive, Muffin, Tofu, Milkshake, Cocoa, Pumpkin or, why not, even Sushi.

5. Finally, why not name your kitten after a brand or famous person you love? Gucci, Brad, Rocky, Charlie Chaplin, Bowie, Hemingway, Gatsby for example!

How to teach your cat his or her name

The best moments to teach your cat its name are those dedicated to cuddles and food. In other words, it must be associated with an action that the feline finds enjoyable. Moments of play are also very useful to familiarise him with his name.

It is therefore important that the name is not associated with an unpleasant fact or a reproach.
