Spring has definitely begun and just like humans, cats too can suffer from allergies typical of the period. The most common are usually caused by pollen, insect bites, toxic plants, dust or parasites such as ticks or fleas.

The way spring allergy manifests itself in cats is very similar to what happens in humans. There are various ways of contagion, including inhalation, contact or ingestion. The most common spring allergies in cats are mainly due to two factors, the pollen they breathe in and parasite bites (mites, ticks, lice and so on). 

Specifically, fleas are particularly annoying animals for our cats. They can in fact cause an annoying allergic dermatitis, which causes itching and irritation, leading the cat to scratch, sometimes even aggressively. For this reason small wounds and abrasions can also be created on the skin, with the consequent discharge of blood. 

In addition, cats that are used to being outdoors may ingest toxic plants typical of the spring period, such as hyacinth and mimosa. In such cases, particular symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea and altered salivation may occur. 

How to treat spring allergies in cats

In the case of spring allergies, prevention is vital if one wants to help one’s cat to live peacefully this season. The use of ad hoc antiparasitics, which are very common on the market, is therefore strongly recommended. 

There are different types of antiparasitic, from spot-on to collars and sprays. In this way, the cat will be protected and can safely go outdoors without any restrictions.
