THE COCKATIEL, HOW TO SET UP ITS HOME

The cockatiels (or nymph cockatoos) are very affectionate, sociable and intelligent companion parrots, that’s why it is not surprising that more and more families wish to adopt one. Are you also part of this category? If yes, you will need to know how to best set up its home and guarantee the little pet a suitable and healthy environment.

Choosing the cage for a cockatiel

Cockatiels are small colorful birds, they never exceed 30 cm in length, but they still need adequate room to move and spread their wings, therefore you should comply with the habitat ideal dimensions so that the tail does not constantly touch the bars of the cage. It is also important that the cage bars are horizontal to allow the bird to climb and that the space between one bar and the other measures from a minimum of 1.3 cm to a maximum of 1.6 cm.

The Viola cage by Ferplast is suitable for all cockatiel specimens, as it has a size of 59 x 33 xh 80 cm, it is made of varnished metal wire net and has a rigid plastic bottom with drawer, essential for collecting dirt and convenient for cleaning. It is built with resistant materials and above all safe for the bird. The particular shape of the rounded roof also ensures great comfort and freedom of movement.

Feeder and drinking bottle for the cockatiel cage

The cockatiel must always have a drinking bottle with fresh water and a feeder at its disposal, fortunately he is easily pleased and loves to eat everything, seeds in particular. All these accessories are already supplied with the Viola cage by Ferplast, the important thing is to remember to check that there is always food available, making sure that there’s not left over for more than 4 hours to avoid attracting bacteria, especially in the case of fruit. Furthermore, for the good health of the bird, even the water in the drinking bottle must be changed often so that it is always fresh and not contaminated by food.

The special feeders present in the Viola cage are designed so that they can be turned 180 °, so that they can be easily filled from the outside, without having to open the cage.

Finally, a cuttlefish bone must also be added, useful for cleaning the beak and filing it.

How to entertain a cockatiel: the best toys

The nymph cockatoo devotes a large part of its time to its own care, to the daily smoothing of its feathers as well as to regenerating baths, which is why a tub of water like Ferplast’s Trevi must always be inserted in its cage. If you want to find a pastime for your beloved bird, you can add some nice toys in the aviary: there are games that encourage the search for food, others to gnaw on and others that improve their skills. Swings, pendants with bells, mirrors, without forgetting the perches, every accessory is essential to color and improve the life of the cockatiel. Try to change them from time to time, so the cage will always look like a different place and you will always keep its level of curiosity high.

Setting up a cage for the cockatiel is simple, we recommend that you cover the aviary at night to ensure the bird has a good rest!
