A dog should go out for a walk at least two or three times a day, to allow him to run, do his business and explore the world. But what if it’s raining outside? No excuses! It is essential for his well-being that he be taken out even on cold, windy, snowy and rainy days.
1. HE CAN ENJOY NEW EXPERIENCES
The problem of rain is a “false problem”, in the sense that a dog is not bothered by the rain itself, but sometimes he is just lazy or too used to his domestic routine, so he will refuse to go out and get wet. On the contrary, going for a walk even with different weather conditions will allow him to enjoy new experiences and get to know the world around him from another angle: smelling the wet ground, the grass and the leaves soaked in rainwater, moving around in a different landscape … it’s all really special for your four-legged friend!
2. IT STRENGTHENS HIS IMMUNE SYSTEM
Going out even when it rains or when the weather is cold should not be something to do as quickly as possible and it is a truly beneficial for your pet’s psychological and physical well-being. A dog always needs to get some fresh air and move, obviously using your common sense and not taking him out for hours in a downpour! Fido needs to exercise from 30 minutes to two hours every day to stay healthy and agile and an adequate workout also helps digestion.
3. HE HAS FUN
A bored dog can become aggressive, paranoid and depressed. To be happy, he needs to have a varied life and be stimulated by new adventures. Rain and snow can become a fantastic game to entertain and amuse your dog. He can splash around in the puddles and roll in the mud and his mood can totally improve in a short while. Of course, if we intend to stay out for a long time, the right precautions need to be taken: having your pet wear a raincoat or a special cape can be an excellent solution to shelter him from the rain and protect his fur from the damp. Then, once you get back home, it is important to dry him with a cloth or a towel.
Another good reason to take your dog out, even when the weather is cold or if it’s raining or snowing outside, depending on the season, is to improve our own mood and strengthen the bond between us and our furry friend. Physical activity releases endorphins that act on the nervous system, reducing anxiety and stress; this is even more so when it rains, because we move with greater difficulty while we walk, compared to normal conditions and, consequently, we burn more fat, thus keeping ourselves in good shape. It is a real cure-all!
Taking your dog out in the rain is an experience to be lived with serenity, also because your dog is perfectly equipped to face the cold and adverse weather conditions in the best possible way!
