THE WORLD’S LARGEST DOG BREEDS

There are some really giant dog breeds, so huge that they almost look like mythological animals. We are not talking about obese dogs: in fact, to fall into this category it is important that weight and height are well proportioned. So here are the biggest dogs in the world!

These large breeds of dog, which are taller and weigh more than average, require a lot of physical activity and a regular diet throughout their lives, as puppies to ensure proper muscle development, and as adults to maintain an excellent state of health.

1. GREAT DANE

Perhaps the most famous of the giant dogs category, the Great Dane is a dog of Germanic origin that can weigh between 100 and 120 kg and 70-86 cm in height. It has a very docile character, even if it looks like anything but a harmless toy. They are very fond of children and are particularly intelligent and obedient.

2. ENGLISH MASTIFF

Nicknamed “lion dog” because of its strong and robust size, it has an average height of 76 cm, but what most characterises it is its weight, which can even reach 125 kg! It can be an excellent watchdog, but it becomes aggressive only if it is provoked.

3. NEAPOLITAN MASTIFF

It is the emblem of power and strength, and its solid appearance combined with its tough look make it an invincible and tireless dog, particularly suitable for physical work. Depending on the sex, it has a size ranging from 60 to 75 cm and weighs from 50 to 70 kg.

4. SCOTTISH GREYHOUND (DEERHOUND)

It has a majestic and regal appearance, thanks to its gait and physical structure. The Scottish greyhound can reach an incredible height of 80 cm at the shoulder, while its weight is around 36-45 kg. It is a perfect hunting and companion dog.

5. SAN BERNARDO

An undisputed icon, this dog breed has a solid and massive body, which can weigh up to 80 kg with a height of 70 cm. In addition to having remarkable mountain rescue skills, it can be a real big baby; in fact, it loves cuddles and spending time with its family. It is a very protective dog.

6. TERRANOVA

A working dog, and a good swimmer, docile and very good tempered. It is usually up to 70 cm tall at the shoulder, and weighs between 50 and 68 kg. It’s dense fur makes it look like a bear, making it seem even bigger than it really is.
