SWEATERS FOR DOGS WHO SUFFER FROM THE COLD

The Bau Bau Moda knit collection

Dogs, especially small ones who are accustomed to the warmth of the indoors, will feel better with a sweater on when they go out for a walk about town! It’s actually better to wrap them up in a nice warm garment before facing the cold of the winter temperatures out of doors. All the more so if they belong to a breed without a natural furry undercoat.

We’ve often talked about how important it is to protect your dog from the winter cold, especially smaller dogs who are used to being cosy and warm indoors all the time. A walk around town without proper covering could bring about any number of seasonal ailments, so it’s better to take precautions with coats and sweaters for them too. Not all dogs like to wear coats however, and a good solution is a sweater that keeps them warm but isn’t so bothersome.

Many dogs, like Yorkshires and Maltese, lack an undercoat of their own, that is, a layer of warm fur right on their skin that protects from the coldest of temperatures. This type of dog, and other dogs that live in the warm indoors, suffer more when it’s cold, a bit like us. That’s why it’s important to protect their more sensitive parts: thorax and tummy.

When you go out for that winter walk, it’s always a good idea to restrict the amount of time you spend out of doors and to make sure they’re always moving, never stopping in the same place for lengthy periods of time. So Yes, do take them for a walk, but please don’t stay in one spot chatting with friends for too long and above all, don’t leave the dog in the car. Dogs left in the car in the summer can suffer heat stroke, but they shouldn’t be left there for any length time in winter either.

Let’s take the dog out with us dressed in a practical sweater made especially for them, that way we can all get some nice fresh air, without overdoing it.

The Bau Bau Mod a collection by Ferplast offers a wide range of dog sweaters. In this picture you see Trilly, a six month old Maltese, out and about with her friend Nicole. She chose a black one with a punk flair – a sequined skull on its back – that matches the Amigo lead and its changeable cover (this time with a printed skull on it). Aren’t they utterly adorable?
