CAN DOGS EAT ICE CREAM?

Recipes and curious facts about ice cream for dogs

Ice cream is a delight that’s hard to resist, especially during the summer. When eating ice cream in front of our dog and he looks at us with those sweet eyes and that long tongue, as if begging us to give him a lick, what should we do?

Giving your dog ice cream is not always a good idea and, although it’s very tempting, it is best to avoid it. The greatest problem is lactose: some dogs are born with an intolerance to this substance, while it develops in others as they grow up. Like in humans, being intolerant to lactose means not having the lactase enzyme in the intestine, which makes it possible to break down the lactose and sugar found in milk and, therefore, also in ice cream. Consequently, eating ice cream might also create problems for our furry friend, like bloating, gas and discomfort.

To avoid such risks, you can purchase one of the many ice creams created especially for our four-legged friends. Yes, these delicious (according to what our four-legged friends who have tried them tell us!) ice creams are truly perfect because they contain no harmful ingredients and are a really refreshing and healthy dessert, making it easier to deal with the hot, muggy weather. They are contained inside little boxes, in liquid form, and need to be frozen, by putting them into your freezer at home, and then served cold to your furry friend.

Alternatively, we can also make good homemade ice cream for Fido: fruit flavours are the best! Here is a quick recipe for making banana ice cream for dogs.

INGREDIENTS

1 ripe banana

2 small tubs of unflavoured yoghurt without sugar

METHOD

Mash the banana well and mix it into the unflavoured yoghurt. Mix in a blender and pour the mixture into a bowl. Put it into the freezer for a few hours, stirring every now and then, until you have obtained the desired consistency. Before giving the ice cream to your dog, let it rest at room temperature for a few minutes, so that it will not be too cold or too hard. Our Glam bowls are an ideal container for letting your little friend enjoy the ice cream. They are bright and colourful and were chosen by the chef and nutritionist Barbara Tonini, from the TV programme Kitchen Bau and Kitchen Miao. A real guarantee!
