Have you ever seen a Tsvetnaya Bolonka, generally simply known as a Bolonka? It’s a small lap dog from Russia. A bundle of energy and fun that makes this dog unique in its kind!
We continue our journey discovering some of the less well-known dog breeds. This time we are looking at the Bolonka. It seems that these dogs were born from a cross between a Toy Poodle, Shih-Tzu, Bichon Frisé and Pekingese, even though initially they were believed to belong to the Bolognese breed. Even though there is no official standard, it is still possible to list some general characteristics of the breed. Here they are!
Starting with their appearance, the Bolonka is a small dog, with a height that on average varies from about 20 to 26 cm, and a weight that varies from about 3.6 to 4.5 kg. Its coat has shiny curls and a thick undercoat, and can be a broad range of colours: beige, brown, red, black, grey-white, black-grey or white-tan. To keep its coat clean and tidy, it needs brushing a couple of times a week.
The breed’s distinctive feature are its beard and moustaches, which are much more developed in males than in females. Their ears are short, quite close to the head or only slightly away from it.
Bolonka dogs are affectionate, always cheerful, very active, and above all very playful, even in adulthood. They are perfect lap dogs that become very attached to their family – especially children – but they also get on easily with other dogs and can live happily with other pets. This makes them easy dogs to own, and they aren’t at all aggressive!
Our beautiful models, Edoardo and Mia, love spending the day together. They often go for walks in town with their mummy, but also love running in the hills or the seaside. Bolonkas are very adaptable, especially when it comes to being outdoors!
